World Read Aloud Day – A Blog is Born

Feb 14, 2014 by

Not only is this the first week of the World Read Aloud Day Blogging Challenge- Raising Our Voices – but it is also the week that I publish my first blog post ever, along with launching this website!

After reading Matthew Winner’s blog about the challenge, I thought, “I could do this! Four posts in four weeks is totally doable! I’ll get my feet wet with blogging by participating in this challenge!”

What happened next was unexpected because, as soon as I started working on creating a blog, it turned into something much bigger. I got to thinking about my own roots as a Read Aloud Fanatic, and traced the path back to the birth of my son in 1993, followed by reading Jim Trelease’s Read Aloud Handbook in 1998. Both of these events made me passionate about the power of reading aloud, and suddenly, a blog was not enough. My passion had led me to read weekly at my son’s preschool and elementary school from the time he was two until he was 7. Children in his first grade class dubbed me, Famous Reader, and only 3 years after I was given this name, I went back to school to get my Master’s in Elementary Education. Read Alouds are essential to growing readers, and I’d like to add my voice to the promotion of this highly effective AND enjoyable reading activity.

So thank you, Matthew Winner, for posting the info about the challenge, and to LitWorld for creating the World Read Aloud Day blogging challenge. You inspired me to get involved in a bigger, more public way! Today, a blog is born and a website is launched.
